If you got your phone or smartphone by subscribing to a mobile plan with an operator, there is a good chance that your beloved phone will be blocked and only usable with the operator in question.

Your mobile is what is called "simlocked", ie it only works on your operator's network. In fact, the device does not accept any other SIM card except that of the original operator. For example: if you obtained your mobile when you took out a subscription with SFR, it is very likely that it is simlocked with SFR.

The advantage of having acquired it in this way is that a priori it guarantees you an inexpensive purchase price of the telephone but which is largely compensated by the duration of the commitment (a commitment of one year or even two years is commonplace) and by the monthly subscription amount you'll be paying for many months.

How to officially and legally unlock your mobile?

Finally, if for some reason X or Y you want to use your phone or smartphone with another operator than the original one, know that it is possible. All you have to do is ask your operator to unlock / unlock your mobile. On the other hand, be careful because there are two very distinct scenarios:

- 1st case: if your mobile phone and your subscription are less than three months old, then the operator will charge you for the operation. Note that the prices for this type of service vary from simple to double depending on the operator. (from a few euros for example with certain operators to €79 with Orange, and even up to several hundred euros with Bouygues).

- 2nd case: if your mobile and the package are more than three months old, then the law is for you! Indeed, perhaps you do not know it, but in France, in accordance with the law, operators are required to unlock, free of charge, the mobile phone of customers who request it.

In both cases, to unlock your mobile phone or smartphone, bring:

- another phone or a landline because you will have to manipulate the phone to unlock.
- the make and model of phone to be unlocked.
- your mobile phone number.
- the IMEI number of your mobile (you will obtain this number by typing *#06# on the keypad of your phone)
- the name of the owner of the telephone (plus possibly his address, date of birth, etc.).

Then contact your operator either through its website (usually in your customer account) or directly by telephone by calling the hotline. Here are some of the telephone numbers of the operators:

- Bouygues Telecom: 614 (from a mobile) or 1064 (from a landline).
- La Poste Mobile: 904 (from a mobile) or 0980 981 981 (from a landline).
- NRJ Mobile: 675 (from a mobile) or 0969 360 200 (from a landline).
- Orange: 700 (from a mobile) or 3970 (from a landline).
- SFR: 900 (from a mobile) or 1025 (from a landline).
- Universal Mobile: 2020 (from a mobile) or 1022 (from a landline).
- Virgin Mobile: 846 (from a mobile) or 0890 891 892 (from a landline).

Whether by Internet or by telephone, the operator will communicate a procedure to you (sometimes a sequence of numbers to enter, etc.) which will ultimately allow you to unlock your device. It will then be usable with any operator on the market, whether Orange, SFR, Bouygues, Free Mobile, Virgin Mobile, etc. or even foreigners. Convenient, for example, if you plan to move or travel soon.
